On May 7, 1994, Norway’s most famous painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. The

The two oil paintings are the best known and now reside in National Gallery of Norway and the Munch Museum. There were also two pastels produced. From despair to a scream. In 1892 Munch painted the picture Sick Mood at Sunset. Despair, a motif that bears many similarities to The Scream. The colours, the format and size, the landscape and background figures – all are the same.

Autumn 2021, a brand new museum opens by Oslo’s waterfront, tailor Munch produced several versions of The Scream. Two of them are paintings, where one belongs to the National Gallery in Oslo, and the second to the Munch Museum. The Scream is based on an experience Munch had when he was walking with two friends in Ekebergåsen on the outskirts of Christiania. 2. The Munch Museum in Oslo / Munchmuseet. Unfortunately, for my trip, The Scream painting at the National Museum was on loan at the time! At first we totally panicked but then we realised that the Munch Museum had not one but two versions of The Scream painting.

The Scream was created twice by Edvard Munch in painted versions as well as in several other different mediums. The two oil paintings are the best known and now reside in National Gallery of Norway and the Munch Museum. There were also two pastels produced.
Six of these, including one that was hand-coloured by Munch, are in the museum today.
